Symptoms
- When you try to start an Office 2016 app, such as Excel 2016 or Word 2016, it fails and you get error code 0xC0000142.
- '0xC0000142' or '-' Stop error when many PowerShell scripts call the Console.Write method or when you try to start many console applications on a PowerShell console in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter.
Assume that you have a computer that is running Windows 8, Windows RT, or Windows Server 2012. When you run an application, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to terminate the application.
In this situation, this error message is not collected by Windows Error Reporting (WER), and no dump file is generated. Therefore, you cannot find the log of this error message in Reliability Monitor or in Event Viewer.
Cause
This issue occurs because the loader stops the application process before the application throws the initialization error. Therefore, WER cannot collect and log the error.
